Louis van Gaal has strongly criticised the current Champions League format, reports Voetbal International. The former national coach believes too many clubs take part in the competition, which widens the gap in standards.
According to the Dutch outlet, Van Gaal thinks UEFA prioritises commercial interests at the expense of sporting quality. He notably said, as quoted by Voetbal International: "Jan Doedel mag tegenwoordig ook aan Champions League meedoen".
NOS, which picks up the story, says Van Gaal is calling for a different organisation of the competition.
